  To all the girls,

i love you.

the one who sees the enemy when she looks into the mirror - i love you. one day you will not feel hate when you look at your own flesh, one day you will not feel guilt rattle every breath you take. darling, it is ok - you have been taught your entire life you are not enough, you have been told over and over again, that your abundance, your hair, your skin, your full lips - are not what we mean when we say “beauty”. you have been taught how to pick yourself apart, before you knew how to build yourself up. you have been taught to want a thigh-gap, to want less, instead of wanting strength. when you feel self-hate and shame, you have been taught that, and darling - you can teach yourself better. you can. start today.

the one who’s been called a slut. do not let that word define how you act, do not let it control how and who you love. virtue is not something to be lost to a boy, no darling,  virtue is courage of conviction, bravery and honesty; virtue is standing up for what you believe in, standing up for those who can’t, it’s fighting a good fight day in and day out. to be virtuous is to be a warrior, for yourself and others. it is what’s inside your head and inside your heart and it is how you stand tall in the eye of a hurricane. slut, slut, slut. it is meant to make you cringe, make you shrivel, make you shed layers of your being. it is mean to make you lose yourself in shame. slut - it is a word as sharp as a blade, it is a label. but it does not label you - it labels the one who says it. the shame is in using words to hurt, but the shame is never in who you kiss, or how many, or where, or when. do not be ashamed.

the one with scars on your body, scars on the skin you’ve made bleed. apologise to it. it is precious, it is stardust, and sun rays and morning rain. it is the universe, wrapped around you like a blanket.

the one who’s been assaulted. i am sorry. i am sorry someone took your choice away. i am sorry someone invaded you, made you homeless in your own skin. i am sorry you were made to feel guilty, ashamed, unclean. i am sorry you were made to feel afraid. i am sorry you were not believed. i am sorry for the pain you feel in the middle of your chest when you try to breathe. i am sorry. you will heal. you survived, you survive, you are a survivor. you are strength personified, you are grace, you are more than this one thing, you are the glory of life unfolding.

the one who is gone. i am sorry they wouldn’t let you be one of us. i am sorry you had to dress in secret, and hide who you felt you were. you were a girl. you were a strong beautiful girl. what you felt was true. what you felt was right.

the ones who still fight, who feel trapped in a body that feels wrong, and foreign and like a place you aren’t meant to be - what you feel is real, it is legitimate - your identity is not a disease, it is not wrong, it is not an abomination, it is not a sin. who you are is right - you are loved, and you will be loved, for exactly who you are, for everything you feel, and want to be. you are a girl, a woman, and like the ones before you - you have a war to fight - a war for a right to be seen and recognised. one day, your daughters and your sisters will give you thanks, one day they will speak of you as a trailblazer.

the ones forced to cover themselves up, and those forced to reveal the skin they wish to veil - there will come a day when you will have full control of your bodies. you will fight for it and you will win. you will free yourselves from the confines of a hostile world. you will not conform, you will change it for the better. you hold power inside you that will not yield, your voice will not break, it will carry, it will echo, it will travel and it will free. you will be able to express your beliefs how you see fit. the anger is your friend here, the anger is what fuels your fire. politeness never won a battle.

the ones whose bodies are commodified and objectified, used as background - everything you do to reclaim them is worthy of praise. the fight against a system that uses all its might to make you invisible is long, it is exhausting and it is unfair - it is losses that make your stomach clench, that make you tighten your fists in anger, that make you want to scream with the voice that’s been silenced for years. the fight against oppression is a fight for fairness, and you are the only one who gets to define what that is, because you are the one who feels unfairness on your skin. i tighten my fist in solidarity. i sharpen my teeth.
